RunPod vs Vast.ai: GPU cloud pricing compared

RunPod and Vast.ai both consistently quote the lowest H100 rates in our coverage set. They get there differently. RunPod runs a managed cloud with a Community tier (independent operators) and a Secure tier (vetted DCs). Vast.ai runs a bidding marketplace where individual hosts list capacity. The trade-off is interruptibility, host trust, and how much operational risk you absorb.

Pick RunPod if

You want pay-per-second managed cloud with an option to upgrade to SLA-backed Secure Cloud capacity, and a single billing relationship. Best for production inference and short-burst training.

Pick Vast.ai if

You are price-led and your workload tolerates interruption (research, distillation, stateless inference). You want the absolute lowest H100 floor and you accept marketplace variance.

Worked example

Acme MLOps Co. (illustrative example, not a real company) needs an 8-GPU H100 cluster for 30 days at 18 hours per day (4,320 GPU-hours). At RunPod's published H100 rate ($2.990/GPU-hr, H100 SXM Secure Cloud, per-GPU) that is roughly $12,917; at Vast.ai's published H100 rate ($1.490/GPU-hr, H100 SXM Marketplace floor, interruptible), roughly $6,437 for raw GPU compute, before storage, egress, and MLOps overhead.
